The purpose of the 2020 Dr. David C. Driskell Achievement Scholarship Award (“Award Program”) is (1) to provide financial support to a classically trained, college bound, high school student located in the Greater Washington Metropolitan area; (2) to strengthen our relationship with strategic partner, the Coalition of African Americans Performing in the Arts (CAAPA) in “bringing color to the classics”; (3) to raise the profile of Dr. David C. Driskell and his accomplishments as an honorary member of The Society Incorporated Supporting the Arts; (4) leverage the alignment of our vision and mission with Dr. Driskell’s vision and passion to support youth in the arts; and finally (5) to offer soft skill development and mentoring to students as they prepare for college and future careers.

The purpose of the Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ode to Joy Essay Contest (Program) is to (1) establish strategic partnerships with organizations that focus on classical music to expand the appreciation of this genre; (2) to develop a relationship with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) to supplement the dearth of creative arts programs; (3) to increase students’ self-esteem and eliminate environmental stressors through classical music experiences; and (4) to elevate the visibility of HCMC to position us as a leading organization supporting the arts within Prince George’s County and across all of The Society, Incorporated Supporting the Arts chapters.
